ACC’s 71st Annual Scientific Session & Expo
Ischemic heart disease remains the leading cause of death in women globally. Alarming trends such as the rise in acute myocardial infarction in younger women, an overall stagnation of the cardiovascular disease mortality decline, and an increase of cardiovascular disease mortality in women from certain countries over recent years have been documented. Sex disparities in diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of myocardial infarction persist with a general underestimation of cardiovascular risk in women. This symposium will explore sex- and gender-specific considerations, inform about current evidence and propose strategies to address sex and gender disparities in the management of women with myocardial infarction.
LOCATION:
Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel
999 9th Street NW
Anacostia Ballroom, Salon D & E
DATE & TIME:
Friday, April 1, 2022
1:00 pm – 6:00 pm
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Attendees will learn about sex- and gender-specific aspects of pathophysiology and risk factors for myocardial infarction. In addition, this symposium will inform about sex- and gender-based disparities in treatment and diagnosis of myocardial infarction in women and how to address these in daily clinical practice. A special focus will lay on the most vulnerable populations, including young women and women of low-socioeconomic background and from minority groups. In case-based presentations, world-renowned experts will share their knowledge and experience with the audience.
This symposium is for healthcare clinicians caring for women with heart disease, including physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, residents, fellows, and medical students.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Review the global and regional epidemiology of myocardial infarction in women
- Address sex- and gender-based disparities in treatment and diagnosis
- Learn about well-established, sex-specific, and under-recognized risk factors of myocardial infarction in women
- Learn about the best screening tools to identify women at risk for myocardial infarction
- Recognize the most vulnerable populations and learn about the challenges they face
- Review clinical cases and learn about SCAD, MINOCA, Takotsubo, and cardiogenic shock associated with myocardial infarction in women
